Diamonds, Are They a Scam?

watching the history channel on all the effort, expense and equipment that goes into mining them, cutting and polishing them, the above question occured to me.

so, except for industrial uses, what is it about them?

i mean, as far as looking at them, glass worth less than a nickel can look the same.

Jewellery, particularly diamond pieces are one of the very few articles that after you have finished with them you can take them back to a store and get some money back. You don't buy a coat, wear it for years then take it back and say can you work out the value please and give me some money?
Don't forget, whatever the retailer gives you will be the lowest price - he is gambling with his own money, the item may have to be broken up and the stone reset into a new more saleable item. All this costs money, and something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it.

Nothing for Ireland from Britain - that's my theory blown out of the water.
Still, the Northern Ireland thing is done and dusted so no need to stay friendly I suppose.

Ireland have just given us 7 points, what is going on?
Oh I just remembered, the peace agreement in Northern Ireland, Paisley and Adams and all that.
Malta have just given us 12 points - they know which side their bread is buttered.

This is stupid - England, the powerhouse of music not only in europe but probably the world are the only country in this stupid competition not to have a point.
I used to laugh at the country's who didn't get any points - now I view it as a badge of honour.
No no no to the Euro. Pull up the drawbridge.
Breaking news - Cyprus gave Greece 12 points, what a shock!

Diamonds are wonderful!!!!!!!!!!
The diamond industry employs more people worldwide than the motor industry!
The diamond industry in South Africa not only provides employment, but schools, roads, hospitals etc, in essence it supplies infrastructure.
Diamonds always have a resale value - imitations do not.
Yes the mark up is high, but if you are a retailer and have to hold a milliond pounds worth of stock and only turn it's value over once a year, it doesn't take Einstein to work out that you need a healthy profit margin.
If everyone stopped buying diamonds the world will be a poorer place - every diamond is totally unique.
Good on you Minimus, keep up the voice of reason.

Only just realised that Cyprus aren't in it so apologies all round.
Wondered why my wife Bubble (bubble and squeak - Greek, gedditt?) was not too interested, she was born here but her mum and dad are from Cyprus.
Anyway, top three Sweden, Greece and Britian.
Don't laugh when I get it spectacularly wrong - Terry Wogan has just said that he has never predicted the winner!
